1790 - George Washington issues the first State of the Union Address in the United States.
1863 - The Emancipation Proclamation provision takes effect.
1901 - The first great oil discovery in Texas takes place.
1934 - Alcohol prohibition in the United States ends.
1946 - In London, the first United Nations General Assembly met.
1959 - Cuban dictator Juan Batista flees, and Fidel Castro's forces enter Havana.
1986 - USSR leader Mikhael Gorbachev asked for a worldwide ban on atomic weapons.
